Optimisation of boiler operation

Case Study: Co-combustion of recovered wood, waste wood and paper sludge

Scope of delivery and services

3D scanning of the existing plant, complete engineering of the project, supply and installation of the conveyor equipment including electrical and control systems, commissioning of the entire plant.

Location

Design, installation and commissioning took place in Germany.

AMF-Bruns has implemented co-combustion for one of Germany’s largest power plant operators by means of additional product processing and feeding into the existing power plant structure.

The project involved the co-combustion of waste wood, scrap wood and paper sludge. This allows the power plant operator to make better use of the existing sludge incineration and to optimise boiler operation. The additional incineration of paper sludge also significantly reduces the need to add lime for SO2 reduction.

The project included product feeding via two additional feed points fed by wheel loaders. The included processing line also allows for re-shredding of waste wood and sorting of FE and NE components from the delivered product. Both feed lines are fed into the boiler house via an AMF-Bruns Air Belt Conveyor and conveyed via twin screw and screw conveyors with an intermediate buffer to the existing coal feeders. In addition to conveying, this also creates an air seal that allows the boiler to operate in the overpressure range.

AMF-Bruns acted as general contractor for this project and, in addition to the engineering and manufacture of the conveyor technology, also carried out the electrical work, installation and commissioning.
